MISE EN SCENE I USED

One thing which needed to be improved from my first draft was the volume of mise en scene I used in my location. I wanted to make it look very full and busy to please and entertain the intended target audience so to do this I needed to use a lot of props.

This is how the room looked after all of the mise en scene had been added which I believe to be a huge improvement from my original video. The first time around, it looked a bit empty and quite drab which wouldn't have necessarily grabbed the attention of the intended target audience and so it wouldn't have been a memorable video. By adding the amount of props which I have, I think the room looks a lot more interesting and fun as well as quirky and vintage which is something that would appeal to my intended target audience.

IMAGES OF MISE

In this section I have used: vintage books, vintage looking tins, candles, a lantern type candle, vintage style boxes, a fan, trinket boxes as well as hanging objects, jewelry, pillows and a vintage looking tape measure which looked really fitting with the rest of the mise en scene. I think that by positioning the objects to look intentionally messy and busy makes it look quirky- which a comment I got in my feedback from my first draft.

Here I have used: handbags, a vintage style owl shaped pillow (very cool), russian dolls, gift boxes, candles- including one in the shape of a VW camper van which looked very vintage yet trendy, a red trunk- which you cant really see) a vintage style chest of draws and a vintage style hanging dress trinket which was very fitting with the look I was going for and reflected the style of my artist well.

Here, you can see where I have filled a jar full of cotton reels in order to create a busy, colourful look (which I think works really well) , ornaments such as the cat, quirky shaped candles, hanging trinkets, vintage style boxes, a vintage style notepad, the flowery vintage bed cover and a union jack pillow.

These vintage style items add to the busyness of the room which I wanted to portray. To do this I have used the vintage style union jack pillow, a door stop which uses bright colours and a bold patter, a vintage, unique looking money box with some change in it to give authenticity, a lantern, a fluffy pillow and a vintage looking tin of pegs.

Here shows the side display unit where I have continued to give a busy, vintage look. On this table I have included a vintage, flowery make up trunk, a candle with a bright, vintage candle, a candle in a frosted glass look, a bucket, two watering cans, a vintage style handbag, a welly boot money box, nail varnishes, tins, a box with a vintage pattern, hanging trinkets, lots of jewelry which give the vintage style I am going for, a hand mirror and some fairly lights. All of these items make to room look quirky ad interesting which is how I wanted it to look. Also, on the bed I have included more candles, more trinket boxes, more jewelry, some flowers, some more hanging trinkets, a blue bag to appeal to the target audience and a vintage style clock to add to the overall vintage aesthetic.

MISE EN SCENE I AM GOING TO USE

I need to organise a list of things which I am going to use. This will enable to me be more organised for when it comes to filming as I won't be frantically rushing around trying to make the room look quirkier and interesting.
  • Candles- I have a variety which would fit in well with the vintage theme which I am trying to convey.

<<<<

These are some of them which I am going to use. They look quite vintage-esque (especially second in from the left and second and third in from the right).

By positioning these items in a cluster with a variety of other items of a similar style, the room will look more quirky and interesting which is one of the things I need to improve on from my video first draft.

  • Vintage style clock- This will make the room look a lot cooler and more interesting to look at. My feedback was to make the room fuller and more interesting so by adding the clock, I will make the room look better as well as managing to stick with the vintage theme.
  • Pillows- They are vintage style; I have an owl pillow which looks slightly old fashioned and quirky as well as blue flowered ones and a vintage union jack pillow.
The point of these would be to fit in with the location (a bedroom- comfort) as well as looking interesting and unique to the audience.
  • Throws- These will make it look busier. There is one particular throw which I have in a blue colour with vintage looking flowers on it which would fit in well with the style I am trying to convey in my video.
  • Jewelry- This is a prop/costume piece which will reflect my artist in the video (as she is supposedly quite trendy and cool and would therefore wear a lot of jewelry) as well as being things which appeal to my target audience. From my target audience research I have found that the audience are interested in things such as fashion and shopping and so would therefore find quirky pieces of jewelry interesting to look at.
  • Boxes- These (as well as filling space) will look good and will be able to have a range of other items piled on top of them to make the room look more full which is the point and look which I am aiming to achieve.
  • Trunks- I have some old style trunks which would look very vintage inspired as well as being able to have other items which would be piled on top to make the room look fuller and more 'vintage'.
  • Chests- Chests of draws would look good piled on top of things as they have a vintage twist and would take up room in order to look interesting and appealing (and fun!) to my intended target audience.
  • Mirrors- I used a vintage style mirror to do an over the shoulder shot in my first draft which I liked. I want to use the same mirror and maybe use some hand mirrors and pocket mirrors which I have got to fill the location and give a busy atmosphere.
  • Random items- These will be very quirky and cool which should drawn the users eye and make them seem interested in the mise en scene of my video. I have a number of items which I want to use including picture frames, a welly boot money box (shown below- links in well with the song title!!!!!!!!!) and a statue of a cat which sounds horrible but is rather cool. All of these things will be attractive to my intended target audience and will make them find the video interesting to watch.
  • Fairy lights- I used these in the first draft video and I have found some others in a slightly darker light which I think will contrast well with the bright ones I have already got. This will gove the room a fun, young, girly atmosphere which is a look I want to give off to those who watch my video.
  • Books- I can get some vintage looking books which would go well with the rest of the mise en scene I want to use as well as making the room look to be styled in a vintage way which is what I want. They can be stacked or spread to look busy which is the intended look.
  • Fans- I have 2 which I want to use- both of which are very flowery and vintage looking and would therefore tie in well with the look and theme which I want to convey in my video.

  • Bags- Although these would be clothing/accessories and may not look as vintage as I would like them to, they are fashionable items which would appeal to my intended target audience as they are interested in these sorts of items.
  • Hanging trinkets- This would look very vintage and very busy which would add to the whole, overall look which I am trying to show. They would hang off anything and would look pretty as well as vintage as well as busy as well as exciting as well as cool so would therefore fit well with the aesthetic I am aiming for

I believe that using these will add to the overall look of the room and make my location look quirky to match the song and style of my artist. Using these will make the location and overall video more aesthetically pleasing to the intended target audience.

POSSIBLE MISE EN SCENE

In order to get a similar feel to the video as there is in the Florence and The Machine videos I need to use mise en scene and props. I have made a list of some of the possible props which I would like to use in the video.

MIRROR

I think this would look cool and give a vintage feel which I want to convey in the video.

TRUNKS

These props are quite big and wouldfill space as well as being vintage which adds to the look I want toput across in the video.
BIRD CAGES

Like the others, these would look vintage and would add to the look of my video. Also they could be quite big and could fillup space.

PICTURE FRAMES

Vintage style empty picture frames would also add to the vintage feel of my video and would fill space.

FAIRY LIGHTS

These would look good wrapped around the picture frames/bird cages/mirror and would make it look more fun and interesting as well as quite young to appeal to the target market.

CANDLES

These would look more interesting and would add to the laid back fun vibe of the song.

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE VIDEOS

SPECTRUM:
Mise en scene: There is a lot of random things in the video however the costumes which she is wearing link into the scene well. For example with all of the ballet dancers, her dress is similar however it stands out more in order to make her be seen as the star (which she is). Her hair and make up are very prominent in the video and the unique outfits work due to the randomness of the video. In the first section of the video Florence is sat on a chair surrounded by a load of other props such as a chandelier, a plant, a table and a lamp. The shadows created from the light being shone at the chandelier makes different shapes on the back drop which makes the shot look really interesting. This teamed with the interesting choice of outfit encapsulates the audience and makes them want to keep watching. There are a lot of props used throughout the video and this is the kind of thing which I need in my video as the props hold the viewers attention.
Lighting: The location where the music video has been shot is quite dark and only has light which shows the mise en secene and gives a creepy, mysterious vibe to the video that has been intended to make the audience question. This makes the video more intriguing to watch.
Camera angles/shots: The majority of the shots are very long which allows time for the audience to watch the Florence as she is performing to the song. She is really eye catching and the mid/long shots allow the viewer to see all of her costume which are really impressive and unique. The close ups on her face allow the viewer to see her make up and hair which adds to the captivation of the video.
Editing: The transitions are smooth and they link in well. When it zooms into the dolls house the transition fades so it looks as though it is going through the window which looks really professional. I need to convey the same level in my video so I need to have smooth transitions. The smooth transitions also reflect the sound of the song which is something I need to consider when filming and editing my video.
Story: The dancers make the video have a slight story to it which I think is interesting as that aside, its all quite random which is a really interesting way to present the video. This captivates the audience as, although it is very random and doesn't really have a story, it keeps attention because of this randomness.

YOU'VE GOT THE LOVE
Mise en scene: The moon is really majestic and adds a 'special' feel to the song. The glitter also makes it more glamorous which reflects the artist. The costume used is really pretty and girly as well as being quite different and quirky which reflects Florences style and music. Her hair looks really natural which works well with her natural make up and reflects the song. Dry ice smoke adds to the magical feel of the video and makes it look even more special. The balloons which are added later on continue to add to the magival feel of the video. This continues in the glitter shower when it shows lots of people having a really good time which reflected the pace and lyrics of the song.
Lighting: The lighting shining in the direction of the camera makes the shots look more special and in the moon scene they look like stars. This shows how all of the filming equipment can be used in order to bring the video together and portray a certain idea.
Camera shots/angles: The opening shot of the video is a close up Florences face from the profile view against a dark background. This is a strong way of opening the video and captures the viewers attention. As she turns around, the camera zooms out into a mid shot allowing the audience to see her outfit for the first time which shows her identity. When she is stood on the moon there is a variety of close ups and mid shots from differnt angles which have been used to show Florence to the viewers. Panning is sometimes used which is quite fast in order to match the pace of the song. The mid/long shot which shows her sitting when the balloons rise has been used to show everything happening in the shot to the viewer.
Editing: The transition from the first scene (close up) to her standing on the moon prop is really smooth as the light goes out and then on again and by that time the scene has changed. The quick transition makes the video seem more professional which is something I need to incorporate into my video. The editing when she is on the moon is very fast which matches the pace of the song and works well.
Story: She dances on the moon with confidence which is something I need to show in my video. She does a lot of hair flicking as well which looks really good and confident and reflects the fact that she is a very successful artist. In the end when she is performing to the audience shows the performance convention of indie pop music and adds to her credibility as an artist. Showing lots of people having fun and being "in love" reflects the story of the song.
